West Coast University and American Career College are private, post-secondary schools offering intense, hands-on education to California students interested in healthcare careers. The programs at American Career College provide education in allied health professions, while West Coast University focuses primarily on instruction in nursing and dental hygiene. 

 

 

West Coast University – In 2009, West Coast University (WCU) celebrated its 100^th year in California. Today, West Coast University is one of the largest educators of nurses in the state, with the ability to graduate approximately 900 nurses each year, across three campuses, through its Board of Registered Nursing approved and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited Bachelor (BSN) degree in nursing programs. In 2008, WCU became the first ever private, proprietary postsecondary institution in California to be approved to offer the full Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.  WCU also offers a bridge program for Associate Degreed Registered Nurses to pursue their Bachelor degree.

 

In the same year, WCU became only the fourth university in California to be approved to offer a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program, which is complemented by the addition of a $2 million dental clinic, built to support the program, at its Anaheim campus. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) has provided “initial accreditation” for this Bachelor-level program.

 

WCU now offers two Master of Science programs- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Master of Science in Health Care Management (MSHCM).

 

WCU  is accredited by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), a national accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education. WCU students attend classes at one of three campuses located in the cities of Los Angeles, Ontario and Anaheim and may take classes online as part of their campus programs. Each campus features modern laboratories and equipment; dynamic and experienced faculty and staff; class sizes that allow for hands-on, intensive instruction; and academic curricula that challenges students and prepares them to become valuable members of the healthcare community.

American Career College - American Career College (ACC) has been providing educational opportunities to students in California for over 30 years. Originally founded as a college of optics, ACCredirected its focus 20 years ago and began to offer targeted training to students interested in the allied health professions. Today, ACC has three campuses located in the cities of Los Angeles, Anaheim and Ontario. Students can select from a wide array of diploma and associate degree (AOS) programs including: Vocational Nursing, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Respiratory Therapy (AOS), Optical Dispensing, Medical Assistant, Massage Therapy, Surgical Technology (AOS), Health Claims Examiner/Medical Biller and Health Information Technology (AOS). ACC is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), which is recognized by the US Department of Education. In addition, some of ACC’s programs are programmatically approved or accredited by practice-specific groups such as the California Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).

 

ACC accepts students without high school diplomas into some programs under the Ability to Benefit option provided by the US Department of Education and offers free GED preparation classes to encourage those students to pursue and obtain their high school equivalency certificate. 

 

Additionally, both ACC and WCU offer career placement services to their graduating students for as long as they remain in the healthcare field.
